Bikers, Hikers go free on Danish summer ferry

Denmark's ferry operators are extending their summer free fare offer for hikers, bikers and people with disabilities to more days and a longer season.

Paid for in part by a government 'summer stimulus' package, the offer was originally valid only on mid-week journeys, but has now been extended to all weekdays. On most routes, it runs through the end of September.

An experiment with the free fares last year, on a one-month basis, produced nearly unmanageable crowds. This year, that should be less of a problem because the free fares must be booked ahead and paid for; they are then refunded but tickets available won't exceed capacity.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
