Barcelona plans public pet cemetery

Barcelona is looking to become the first city in Spain with a municipal burial ground for pets or their ashes, in response to public demand in a city with 180,000 dog owners and with half the city having a pet of some kind.

The cemetery, planned for the Collserola Natural Park in the hills above the city, will provide a €200 service that includes being accompanied throughout the process, from the time the animal dies until the cremation. Ashes can either be buried on site or returned to owners.

The facility, set to open by the end of 2024, will set the city back about €1.1 million to construct. The city estimates about seven thousand services a year will take place.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
