At Marriott, now it's a 'sustainability fee'

Watch your hotel bill carefully: a new nightly fee has popped up at some Marrioitt hotels, and might be spreading elsewhere.

Just when you might have thought hotel bills were about to become more transparent with MGM and some others agreeing to show 'resort fees' up front and legislation moving to require all fees to be disclosed, a new one has popped up at some Marriott hotels.

A traveler posting on the Flyer Talk website was the first to point it out at the Hotel Saint Louis, a Marriott Autograph Collection property in Missouri. The Points Guy website contacted the hotel and was told it was "helping with recycling" and "reducing the carbon footprint." No information was available on just how the fee would do that.

Others have reported similar fees at other hotels, sometimes labeled as a "utility fee." Who knows what's next: Perhaps a bed fee or a rental charge for keys.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
