Ancient Book of Kells goes high-tech

The Book of Kells, the 1200-year-old Latin gospel manuscript that is the prized possession and main attraction of Dublin's Trinity College Library is getting a high-tech make-over this month in a new pavilion on the college's campus.

Dubbed the Book of Kells Experience, it offers visitors the chance to page through the 680-page highly-illustrated book through electronic images, along with exhibits about its origin in Scotland and its long residence at the Abbey of Kells near Dublin. In the Old Library, the book's home since 1916, only a few pages are exposed to light at a time, with page turning every few weeks.

The Experience begins in the Old Library and lasts about 90 minutes. The exhibits also include a selection of sculptures from the Long Room depicting Rosalind Franklin, Lady Gregory, Ada Lovelace, Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Socrates, and Mary Wollstonecraft.
