Amtrak $20 20th-birthday sale

Amtrak is celebrating Acela's 20th birthday with a special $20 fare on its high-speed trains, soon to be replaced by an even faster and sleeker set of new cars and locomotives. Move fast: the sale ends tonight.

The special fare, good on any part of the Boston-New York-Washington Northeast Corridor, can be used for travel between November 16th and December 17th, with some restrictions and blackout dates, including Thanksgiving weekend. Through Dec. 31, Amtrak is waiving change fees, too. Acela fares normally start at $115 and go up from there.

The new trains, built by Alstom, which also builds high-speed trains for many of Europe's rail systems, were assembled in the U.S., and had their first run to the Department of Transportation's test site in Colorado. They'll go into service in the New Year, with faster speeds, Wi-Fi and USB outlets and ADA-compliant lavatories.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
