Airlines falling in line on family seats

Apparently a little push from the President and a rising swell of ill-will have pushed even more U.S. airlines into dropping fees for seating children with an adult family member.

United and Frontier took the first steps after a warning in the State of the Union message that the issue was a priority and that airlines faced regulatory action if they did not comply. United guaranteed seating children under 12 with a family adult at no fee, and Frontier set the line at 14.

Tuesday, American followed with an announcement that it, too, would guarantee families could sit together in all fare classes at no extra cost, while Delta issued a claim that it didn't charge for family seating. Southwest, which does not have assigned seats, has modified some rules to give families a better shot. Newcomer Breeze Airways has long made a point that it always seated families together.

While it is still not clear what the situation is at other airlines, or whether the issue will eventually be standardized is still not clear, but it is clear which way the tide is running.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
