Airlines call new rules 'TMI' for consumers

The lobbying group that represents most U.S. airlines and at least six of the airlines say new Department of Transportation rules should be dropped because they will confuse consumers by giving them too much information.

They'd like to keep the present rules that allow them to keep information about fees for baggage, changes or cancellation hidden until near the end of online sales instead of being required them to disclose the fees on the same page as they first quote a price.

The industry groups claim the new rules, finalized last month and set to go into effect later this year, are also "arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion and otherwise contrary to law." They also called it an "attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace... beyond its authority."

Gumbo wonders: if the airlines think consumers will be confused by being told how much their tickets will cost, aren't they worried we'll be confused about why they want to not tell us upfront?

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
