Air New Zealand to test beds in economy

The lie-flat seat that's the big sell for premium passengers may be coming to the back of the plane, at least for a few passengers at a time if Air New Zealand is approved to test its 'Skynest' idea.

The airline plans to create a back of the plane area with six beds equipped with pillow, bedding and a privacy curtain. Passengers would have to be strapped in their seats for take-off and landing, before taking their pre-reserved time in the sack. The pod spots would be sold for segments, rather than for the entire flight.

Tests won't begin for at least a year to allow for testing and government approvals, but the airline says "This is a game-changer on so many levels." The airline also says it's willing to license the Skynest to other airlines.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
