About an hour’s drive from Tbilisi is the Kazbegi region, replete with mountains, monasteries and fortresses, the Ananuri Fortress stands close to an artificial water body called the Zhinvali Reservoir, created for the purpose of both conservation and tourism.

Offering photogenic spots for selfies and portraits for a small fee, it also has a gentle promenade where visitors can amble across at leisure, filling their souls with the spectacular beauty of this attraction, while a few stalls and shops proffer snacks and souvenirs to those wishing to grab a slice of joy to share with themselves or their loved ones back home.

The guide for the day was a vivacious young woman—an archeologist by qualification and a storyteller by passion—who regaled us with tales rich in myth and local lore, with a side of hard science and fact.

Filled with a calm and serenity that can only come from witnessing a thing of exquisite beauty, we settled ourselves to an equally fulfilling lunch.
