What’s New in Rabat

Rabat is the capital city of Morocco and is a growing and well-maintained metropolis.  There were two new constructions I saw when I visited which I found noteworthy.

The Mohammed VI Tower is actually in the adjoining city of Sale, and abuts Rabat.  It’s an impressive 55-story tower standing 250-metre (820 ft) tall.  The tower is named for the country’s current King, although it is a private building funded by a Moroccan entrepreneur.  This is the tallest building in Morocco and the third tallest in Africa.

The Grand Theater of Rabat is a performing arts center located not far from the above tower.  The theater’s design is quite eye-catching and unusual for the country.   The current King (Mohammed VI) was an advocate for its construction and mission to promote the arts.  It has 1800 seats and an outdoor seating capacity of 7000 seats.  The theater opened for performances in 2024 and is part of a plan to develop 110 acres in the region along the Bou Regreg River.
