Visiting a School in Rajasthan

While we were traveling through Rajasthan, our guide arranged a stop at a public (government run) school in a small town.  The guide knew someone at the school who granted us access — not sure exactly what the connection was.  We spent about a half hour exploring the school, seeing the students, talking to a few of them (most couldn’t speak English) and experiencing their educational environment.  It was a bit of an eye-opening experience.

As with many countries, there are public and private schools in India.  Wealthier families usually send their children to private schools; however, most Indian families are relatively poor and public education is the only option for their children.  There are reportedly tens of thousands of government schools in Rajasthan.

The school we visited was a simple structure made of bricks.  It seemed well attended, with students covering a pretty wide age range. Most were dressed in blue and white uniforms — something I actually like because uniforms eliminate clothing “one-upmanship”.  Smaller children were receiving their lessons on blankets – no desks or chairs for them.  Some of their classes were held outside on the school grounds, some in hallways, some in classrooms.  Lessons were outlined on a chalkboard in most instances.  Overall the students seemed pretty happy.

Older children were in classrooms with desks and textbooks (provided at no charge).

There was no high tech here – I didn’t see even one computer monitor anywhere.  I’m sure there is a tend to modernization, but India is still a relatively poor country and this likely will take a long time.

Schools typically start with morning assembly and serve mid-day meals. Some upgraded schools have smart classrooms. Girls can receive extra support such as bicycles and self-defense classes.

Schools frequently operate in older physical facilities and infrastructure, and many experience teacher shortages in the places that need them most.  But they offer kids a way towards a better future — at least as much as the caste system allows.
