Vienna’s City Councilor for Culture says the city is thinking about adding a ‘culture Euro,’ an extra charge dedicated to support of the city’s museums, concert halls and artists, to be collected on top of the existing per-night tourism tax.
Veronica Kaup-Hasler says that it makes sense since the city’s cultural life is part of the reason it is experiencing “a tourism boom in a class of its own.” There is, as yet, no concrete plan for the charge, but it is gaining ground within the city government.
The city’s existing tourism tax, levied on stays under 30 days in hotels or apartments, is 3.2% of 89% of the rental rate. The other 11% of the rental rate is the national VAT, or value added tax, and the tourism fee is not charged on it.
