Veterans Memorial Park, Winnemucca, Nevada

Winnemucca is a rather small and isolated city in vast expanse of northern Nevada’s desert landscapes.  There’s not that many tourist-related attractions in town, so I was a little surprised it had a Memorial Park, which we stumbled across while driving around the city.  It being a week of remembrance of Veterans, I thought I’d feature it today.

Veteran’s Memorial Park honors military veterans and was dedicated on Veterans Day in 2017.  The highlight of park is its displays of military equipment, each piece with an informative plaque.

The park displays include:

Japanese type 38 75 mm Field Gun.  Used in the first half of the 20th century
M5A1 Stuart Light Tank.  Powered by 2 Cadillac engines, and a manual Cadillac LaSalle transmission (same one as the car)
M60A3 Tank

Bell UH-1 Huey Helicopter.  This one logged over 2000 hours of service in Vietnam
F-86 Sabre jet (originally constructed in 1953 as an F-86D, later converted to F-86)

Besides the plaques providing information about the military hardware, there are also a number of informative plaques, like these:

Veteran’s Memorial Park has picnic tables and places for kids to play.  Its green grass is well maintained, and a change from the desert brown.

The park offers great panoramic views of the desert, Winnemucca and nearby Sonoma Peak.
