Valencia, Spain is trying out some high-tech ideas to keep the peace between its exuberant cafe-goers and neighbors trying to sleep or have a quiet day.
The pilot project, funded by the City Council, will see cafes in the Ruzafa neighborhood getting sound-absorbing material, sound sensors, and little red lights on the terrace tables. When the sound at the table gets too loud, the red light comes on as a reminder.
The installation also includes sound-absorbing discs above the terraces which not only absorb sound, but also act as umbrellas against high heat or rain; they’re made of a special temperature-reducing fabric.
Valencia’s Councillor for Climate Improvement Carlos Mundina said that the pilot project “aims to ensure Valencia has an urban space that is respectful of the environment and people.” Some locals aren’t convinced; they say the pilot project area is too small and that some of the panels are falling.
