What is said to be the world’s only doorbell for fish is back for its fifth season in Utrecht, the Netherlands, helping fish migrate through the Weerdsluis lock in Utrecht.
The system, described in a previous Gumbo article, uses underwater cameras to alert the lockkeeper when there are enough fish waiting for the lock to be opened.
The video feed is live-streamed—last year over 20 million people tuned in to watch. The live stream also has a button users can press to notify the lockkeeper when they see a fish traffic jam that hasn’t been responded to yet. 150,000 viewers hit the bell last year.
