U.S. growing a balance-of-travel deficit with Canada

While recent reports have highlight big drops in Canadian visits to the U.S., and Canadian airlines have been dropping trans-border routes an schedules, the opposite is happening for U.S. travel to Canada.

Canadian government statistics indicate that while U.S. visitors to Canada dropped by 4.7% last year (compared to a nearly 21% drop in Canadian visits to the U.S.) the figures have been rising recently. February’s numbers were up 6.1% from a year earlier, the first increase after 12 months of year-over-year declines.

Much of the drop in Canadian visits has been attributed to the current political climate in the U.S. and fear generated by reports of visitors detained by immigration officials, factors that do not apply in the other direction.
