Turkey: Fresh bread from 5000-year-old loaf

A Bronze Age loaf of bread has yielded its secrets, and is now being baked again in Turkey, with customers lining up for it.

The original loaf was buried, likely for good luck, under the threshold of a (then) newly-built house about 5,000 years ago in central Anatolia, near the city of Eskisehir. The round flat loaf, about 12 cm in diameter, was discovered during excavations at a nearby site.

“This is the oldest baked bread to have come to light during an excavation, and it has largely been able to preserve its shape,” said Murat Turkteki, archaeologist and director of the excavation. “Bread is a rare find during an excavation. Usually, you only find crumbs,” he told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
