Town that named Route 66 ready for Centennial

Springfield, Missouri—one of America’s many Springfields—has been named as the National Kickoff City for next year’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ‘Mother Road’ and all its lore.

The designation of Springfield is based in part because a telegram sent from there on April 30, 1926 to federal officials contained the official proposal for the route’s number. The designation comes from the U.S. National Route 66 Centennial Commission, established by Congress in 2022.

The commission is working with state and local authorities of all kinds across the length of the road, starting with a kickoff concert with top entertainers in Springfield next April 30.
