In Japanese tradition and religion, torii are gates that mark a transition from the ordinary to the sublime, from the mundane world of humans to the realm of the gods.

So, perhaps it’s appropriate to share these images of the torii that is a landmark of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Japanese Hill and Pond Garden, showing its transition between seasons, and between day and night.

The evening images were made at dusk during the Garden’s annual Lightscape presentation; without the colored lighting, the world has turned to monochrome—except for the torii.
