Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, Philadelphia

This monument is located in beautiful Washington Square, one of 5 green spaces in old Philadelphia.  It’s part of Independence National HIstorical Park.

In 1954, the Washington Square Planning Committee decided to construct a monument to honor the thousands of soldiers who died during the American Revolutionary War.  The monument includes a bronze of Washington as the monument’s centerpiece.  It was completed in 1957 and includes an eternal flame and the remains of a soldier, one of many who are buried in the square.

Philadelphia 10-2001 (7)Washington Square is just a block from Independence Hall and a popular recreational spot for residents and visitors alike.
