Most travelers passing through a major airport with a bit of time to spare are looking for a lounge or somewhere to eat and wait, but at Tokyo’s popular Haneda airport, there’s now another option: a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
On March 2, tea master Machiko Hoshina will be holding ceremonies in the Haneda Airport Garden complex, with ceremonies in both English and Japanese. If it proves popular, it may be only the first of more such airport ceremonies.
The airport and garden don’t have a dedicated tea-ceremony space, but that’s been solved by Hoshina’s collaboration with Mobile Chashitsu—a mobile tea ceremony space created by a company called Hanamasa Mokko. The Chashitsu, or tea room, is made of sustainable wood and can be assembled or disassembled in one hour.
