The market has a long historical presence in European cities. For better or worse, in Lisbon, that role has been changed. I visited two historical markets on a recent visit. In the neighbor hood of Alcântara, the market has been turned over to the supermarket chain Lidl.

In Chiado, along the river, the old Mercado da Ribiera has had a different fate. Time Out magazine has taken over the Market. They have turned half of it into a food hall featuring stalls run by many of the hottest restaurants in the city. The other half has been maintained as a traditional market with produce, fish and meat merchants. I will be writing more about this interesting change, but here are some photos of its architecture.
