A recent visit to Cleveland’s Old Stone Church, which has wonderful stained glass windows by two of America’s greatest stained-glass artists, Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge, reminded me of images I made a few years ago at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston

In contrast to the religious themes at the Old Stone Church, the three windows lined up for the MFA exhibit were purely secular, with themes drawn from nature. Tiffany and La Farge were commercial and artistic competitors, and both claimed invention in the use of opalescent glass. I take no sides—you’ll have to decide if you do!
