The Worthington Glacier, Alaska

If you have to make a 10 minute stop because of road construction, this spot in Alaska is a good place to do it. We got out of the car and took in the lovely scene of the Worthington Glacier for some time.
A beautiful place to be delayed by road construction.

The Worthington Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska. It’s located in the Chugach Mountains in the southeastern part of the state. on the Richardson Highway, roughly a half hour from Valdez (milepost 28,7). The glacier rests in a valley near Thompson pass, and covers about 5,775 acres.

There is a roadside stop (recreation site) beside the glacier which offers lots of parking and trail access (including handicap access).  I’d definitely recommend stopping so that you can have a better look at the glacier.  There is also informative signage along the trail, and other hiking opportunities can be found at the site.
Worthington Glacier — closer views

The Worthington Glacier was listed as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. because “This site possesses exceptional value as an illustration of the nation’s natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of the environment.”

All of Alaska seems pristine and picturesque, including nearby Thompson Pass.
A puny human provides some perspective on the immensity of the landscape.

Not far from this spot we encountered two moose.  They are actually a fairly common sight in Alaska.
