The Toy Train—Another Himalayan Adventure

I didn’t know what expect when the tour schedule listed The Toy Train. But I trusted Exodus Adventure Travels and knew it would be fun and historic.

When we arrived, we had a wonderful view of the Himalaya Mountains and the maze of narrow-gauge train tracks. The Viceroy’s Toy Train is now used for operational purposes and as a tourist attraction. The railroad is included in the Mountain Railways of India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We board with a sense of adventure as we are instructed not to leave our windows open when the train slows for stops along the way. Monkeys will try to board the train to steal food and other items from passengers.

The train is an excellent example of an engineering marvel of narrow-gauge railways. It was built in the late 19th century to connect the hill station of Darjeeling with the plains. We board in Shimla.

The railway is known for its scenic routes. Along with views of the Himalayas, the train represents India’s cultural heritage and colonial history that reflects the British influence in the region.

In addition to its historical significance and tourist draw, the train also serves as a vital transportation link for local communities, enhancing accessibility to remote areas.

After our 50-minute journey through pine forests, tunnels and over bridges, we depart and make our way to the Tara Devi Temple; our next adventure.
