The Khadi Silk Factory, Murshidabad, India

The second half of day two of our trip to Murshidabad was spent in a leisurely exploration of a handloom silk factory in the remote outskirts of town.

Indian handloom or ‘Khadi’ is famous all over the world for its simple beauty and rustic charm, and the silk in particular is highly prized among connoisseurs and collectors.

While the women painstakingly work and weave on the low spinning looms or ‘charkhas’, the men tend to the grounds and gardens and the silkworm incubators.

A small but well-stocked emporium (see title image) ensures that one goes away heavily laden and happy with the day’s shopping and retail therapy!
