For anyone who appreciates history, romance, and beauty, New Orleans’ Garden District is a destination you won’t want to miss when you visit the Big Easy. And although you can stroll the tree-lined streets on your own, to better understand the history and who lives where, take a guided walking tour.
This is exactly what I did on the Two Chicks Garden District tour.
A group of 10 met at a cafe, and off we went with our cheerful and fun guide, Emily. She first explained the area’s history.
The area was originally developed between 1832 and 1900 and is considered one of the best-preserved collections of historic mansions in the Southern United States When wealthy Americans arrived in the city, they did not want to live in the French Quarter with the Creoles.
Lots were carved out of plantation property, and two or three houses were built on each block. Each property was surrounded by gardens, and thus the neighborhood took on the name Garden District.
The two-hour tour passed opulent houses with different architectural features, albeit lined up like fancy ladies at a ball, not the original few houses per block.
The time flew as our guide narrated the features of the homes and pointed out such famous homes as Anne Rice’s former mansion and actor John Goodman’s hideaway behind tall shrubbery.
She also spoke of urban enslavement and the importance of never forgetting this injustice.
When you visit New Orleans, make sure to take in a Garden District tour. Beyond the beauty, you will have a better understanding of this neighborhood and be in awe of the amazing homes.
