The Dead Tell Tales

During the same week as Christmas, I discovered yet another hidden gem in my hometown, Kolkata. I had chanced upon it while looking for things to do in my city and came across the “South Park Street Cemetery” as not only an architectural marvel but also for photography tours.

I did wonder for a bit how a cemetery could prove to be a site for niche photographers but had to change my mind upon the very first step into this secluded and sacred premises. Even though it is situated right on the main road, and many people pass by completely ignorant of the treasures inside, the area itself is lovingly maintained by a tiny and dedicated community that operates a ticket counter with very nominal charges and also keeps a tight watch on those who might want to indulge in indiscretions while wandering the grounds.

As the headstones and mausoleums appear one after the other in quick succession, one is transported back in time, and wondrous designs and styles bring to life the amazing beauty and diversity of eras long gone, but fortunately not lost to oblivion. A minimum of one hour ensures that enough pictures have been taken for posterity, while another hour may well be spent in quiet reflection.

In fact, the ticket is only for two hours and visiting there in the early hours of either the morning or evening is ideal, followed by a robust cup of tea or coffee at one of the many nearby eateries.
