The Copper King Mansion, Butte, Montana

The Copper King Mansion is an impressive 34-room Victorian home located in Butte, Montana’s historic district.  It was built in 1884–1888 and is a lasting symbol of the era of Butte’s copper-mining wealth.

The home was built by William Andrews Clark Sr., one of the “Copper Kings” of Butte, as a wedding present for his second wife.  Clark later became a U.S. Senator from Montana and was one of the richest men in America.

Some of the features of the home include hand-carved woodwork throughout, original frescoed ceilings, 26 stained-glass windows (some by Tiffany), and it was one of the first homes in Montana to have indoor plumbing and electricity.  I’ve never been inside the home, but from these photos, it looks beautiful!

For years the home was used as apartments and later as a Catholic girls home.  It is now privately owned and was converted into a bed and breakfast which offers public guided tours (May–September daily, limited hours in spring/fall)

It is located at 219 W. Granite Street.  Tours are available and if you are interested you can stay in one of the rooms (B & B)
