The Candelabra of the Andes, Peru

Today’s Pic of the Day shows a geoglyph located on Peru’s coast, specifically on the Paracas peninsula.  The photo was taken from a boat on the Pacific Ocean (Paracas Bay to be specific), and the geoglyph is massive. about 595 feet (181 meters) long and 164 feet (50 meters) wide, with lines up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) deep.  Digging into the soil creates the contrasting colors that result in the formation being as visible as it is.

The Candelabra’s exact age is not known, although it’s thought to be about 2300 years old.  It might have been a navigational marker, although its exact purpose is not known.

The surrounding coast and nearby islands are rich with bird and sea-life, and are part of Paracas National Reserve..

It looks unreal. I would love to see it in person!
