While we were walking in Monteverde’s famous cloud forest — it was misty and rainy as the name implies — we almost passed this lifeform.
It’s a large walking stick insect (“stick bug”), quiet and immobile, well camouflaged. We probably would have missed seeing the bug if it hadn’t been as large as it was (about a foot in length).
Walking sticks like warm humid weather and are plentiful in the rain forests of Central and South America. They are herbivores, eatting leaves, berries and vines.
