Taken On The Road: 1956 Cadillac de Ville

The Montagu Country Hotel in South Africa’s Klein Karoo region offers not just accommodation and food—they also have two classic cars you can hire on an hourly basis. Once we had spotted that on their website, we couldn’t resist the temptation and got in touch to book a 2-hour drive in their 1956 Cadillac Sedan de Ville.

It was already waiting for us outside the hotel when we got there.

A driver was included in the price and I do not think you can actually just hire the car. Many people would probably struggle with a column shift, anyway, and even a minor accident might cause damage that is costly or impossible to repair properly.

We elected to go on a brief tour of Montagu and then for a drive along the lovely Route 62, which runs through the town.

Obviously, we needed to stop in a few places and take (plenty of) photos!

As I said, we had two options for the car. The other one would have been the 1964 version of the same series.

It is even longer than the 1956 model, albeit only slightly. On balance, however, I prefer the rounded edges of the older car.
