The castle overlooks the town from a commanding position at the top of a steep hill. It was originally built by the Genoese in the 14th century (probably over the foundations of an ancient acropolis) and was later added to by the Ottomans.

A view of the town – also known as Molyvos – from its harbour. The town is an atmospheric maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional stone houses.

The photo was taken at a harbour taverna in Mithymna.
