Trains operated by neighboring countries’ rail operators, such as Trenitalia or SNCF or independents such as Flix, will soon have access to operate domestic routes within Switzerland—but only with conditions. Opening Swiss rails is a condition of the new economic package agreed between Switzerland and the EU.
New operators won’t be able to lower prices because of low wages, because Switzerland is requiring them to pay wages matching Swiss industry standards, as well as comply with Swiss law on benefits, working hours and vacations.
Any new operators will also be required to take part in Swiss season-pass fares and half-fare provisions.
