Swiss mountain hiker rescued by chihuahua

Well, not exactly. But nearly exactly, if reports are to be believed.

Air Zermatt, the rescue service in Switzerland’s southern Alps, says the man was hiking a mountain trail with his long-hair chihuahua when he fell into an 8-meter deep crevasse and could not climb out.

Using a walkie-talkie he carried, the man was able to notify emergency services, but “On site, the search for the collapse site proved difficult. The glacier surface was wide and the hole was barely visible,” according to the rescue workers. But then they spotted a small movement on a rock, where the dog had stationed himself, not moving from the scene.

“Thanks to the dog’s behavior, the crew was able to locate the exact site of the accident,” Air Zermatt said, adding that “rescuers abseiled down to the casualty and were able to save him…It is fair to say that his behaviour contributed significantly to the successful rescue.”

Quite a difference from the traditional St Bernard!
