Sweden is bracing for a Norwegian invasion starting tomorrow, when it slashes fuel taxes and becomes one of Europe’s cheapest places to buy gas.
In fact, to get any cheaper, it turns out, you’d have to head to North Macedonia instead of a little local jaunt. And that goes for diesel as well; Sweden will be the fifth cheapest in Europe.
Swedish stations near the border have been stocking up in anticipation, but they’re not completely sure they can handle it all—the head of emergency preparedness at industry group Drivkraft Sverige told press that “The pumps might run dry for a few hours. But that will be sorted out. There is fuel available. There’s no worry about running out completely. It’s more that deliveries might take some time.”
The cut in fuel taxes brings prices back to 1999 levels, and is intended to help offset rising energy costs from the war in the Middle East; the cut will be in place until December 31.
