The Baltic Sea has yielded another historic shipwreck for Swedish researchers, found late last year by Swedish navy divers on a military exercise.
The find was announced last week by officials, who said it would provide “unique historical and archaeological information.” The wreck, not yet identified, is about a century older than the famous warship Vasa, salvaged in the 1960s and on display in Stockholm.
The ship has been designated a historic monument, protecting it from diving, fishing or anchoring in the area while researchers explore it and plan its future. One antiquarian involved in the work said ” the shipwreck is of significant cultural value.”
The Baltic Sea has a unique combination of cold, darkness, low oxygen and high salt concentrations that contribute to the good condition in which a number of wrecks have been found.
