Stockholm’s Nobel Prize Museum is slated to get a new home near the city’s waterfront, with new spaces for its museum exhibits as well as event space that will accommodate ceremonies and other events as well.
The move comes with controversy; some critics have labeled the building itself as looking like game pieces from an online game, and others have objected to further crowding of the Slussen area where the new center is sited. On the other hand, it has been pointed out, it is close to Fotografiska, the photography museum and to the city’s history museum, creating a sort of ‘culture cluster.’
The new complex will also include restaurants, a gift shop and terraces at street level and on the rooftop. The head of the Nobel Foundation told reporters that “It will be the most powerful symbol of knowledge in the world.”
The museum is currently housed in the former Stock Exchange building not far away in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s ‘Old Town.’ It’s been there since 2001.
