Stamped off the Road: Vocho Mufi

You’ve probably seen a million VW Beetles painted and decorated any number of ways, but I suspect this one is unique: It’s covered, every inch of it, in postage stamps.

Even its upholstery is woven with a postage-stamp pattern.

This is Vocho Mufi. Vocho is the Mexican equivalent of beetle, and Mufi is the Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca. The museum sponsored creation of the project in j1999 to encourage interest in indigenous design and in stamp collecting.

The stamps, with a variety of designs, were meticulously hand-applied to the 1993 vehicle.

It’s not the museum’s only touch of philatelic art; it also features an exhibit of traditional textile designs that were also reproduced on stamps, and a number of other artworks created from stamps.
