St Lucia: Spectacular Views, Lovely Gardens

 Senior Sailor Says…

Our final destination in St. Lucia was Stony Hill, a private home where the owners open their tropical gardens for guests to enjoy.

But first, we enjoyed a leisurely ride on a small bus to several lookouts, where we could enjoy sweeping views of the country’s capital, Castries, its picturesque harbor, and the distant island of Martinique.

The first known inhabitants of St. Lucia are believed to have settled on the island between 200 and 400 AD.

The French were the first European colonists to settle on the island in 1660. The English took control of the island in 1663. In the ensuing years, England and France fought 14 times for control of the island for the island’s valuable geopolitical position.

Eventually, the British took complete control in 1814, shortly after the victory over French Emperor Napoleon. In 1979, Saint Lucia became independent, remaining a Commonwealth realm. As a sovereign nation, it is a member of the United Nations.

It’s no surprise that tourism is the most significant contributor to Saint Lucia’s economy, given its mountainous beauty surrounded by glimmering blue waters. More than a million tourists visit every year, and the population is around 200,000.

After our guide/driver finished his historical narrative and our lovely drive, we arrived at Stony Hill, which is surrounded by three acres of beautifully landscaped tropical gardens.

The grounds have been designed to accommodate both the avid walker and the more laid-back traveler. The landscaping and pathways offer spectacular views of the coastline.

As we enjoyed the views, flowers, and palms, a steel drum player played soft island music.

It was another wonderful day in the Caribbean with Viking Ocean Cruises.

Gumbo's Pic of the Day

McArthur Lake, Idaho

I really love to get pictures with smooth water, but I love this picture with the small waves and crisscrossing patterns across the water.
