Avebury is a small village in Wiltshire, not far from Stonehenge, which is best known for it’s massive Neolithic stone circles – the largest in the world and along with Stonehenge forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Situated within this quaint village, and close to the prehistoric stones is a small Christian church, St James’ Church. The site dates to around 1000 A,D,, with a few elements of the church from that era still surviving.

I’ve visited St, James Church twice and found it open for visitation both times, with no admission fee. It is still an active parish church.

One of the picturesque aspects of your visit is the old stone cemetery on the church property, the stone monuments eroded and covered with lichens.
