Spain, Portugal building bridges

Spanish and Portuguese authorities have given the go-ahead to three new bridges connecting the two Iberian countries and improving both transport connections, and cross-border connections between towns near the bridges.

Perhaps the most significant is a new bridge across the Erges river near Monfortinho, which could make a big difference in traffic between Madrid and Lisbon. On the Spanish side, an expressway to Madrid comes within 20 kilometres of the planned bridge, available to connect to highways on the Portuguese side. It would create the most direct road connection between the two capitals.

The most advanced project discussed is a bridge over the Guadiana River; the detailed agreement between the two countries is already finalized and financing is in place. The third project to get a go-ahead signal is a feasibility study for a Minho river bridge that would boost cross-border travel between Portugal’s northern region and Spain.
