Spain: new direct rail routes

Spain’s national rail operator, Renfe, is adding its first direct service from Barcelona in the northeast to Seville in the southwest, eliminating the need to change trains in Madrid.

The link between Spain’s second and fourth largest cities starts later this month, and will initially be one train per day in each direction. Time for the trip is just under 6 hours, with tickets starting at about €100.

At least for now, Renfe will also continue its six-times-a-day connections that require changing trains at Madrid’s Atocha station, although in future that might change. The new train will leave Seville at 6 a.m.; after Barcelona, it will continue north to Figueres near the French border. Southbound, it will leave Barcelona at 4:58 p.m. and arrive in Seville before 11 p.m.
