Sighnaghi, Royal Town of Georgia

Sighnaghi—the city of lovers, or Royal Town as it is better known as—will make any visitor sigh with longing, for whatever kind of love or romantic connection they have, or wish they had. Indeed, going solo as I often do, I initially felt that I would stand out like a sore (pun intended!) thumb among the couples ubiquitously seen wandering here, but I realized it is for anyone that can still appreciate anything beautiful and peaceful in this life.

From the shaded cobblestone walkways winding across the expanse, to looking out over the picturesque valley below dotted with the signature red tiled roofed houses, to negotiating the crowds walking to and from the narrow watchtowers, it was a tiring yet lovely journey through time.

In the heat of the afternoon, the amazing iced coffee was a welcome break, and stalls, carts, small cafes and convenience stores selling snacks, chocolates, ice-creams and of course souvenirs, offer some respite now and then from all the exertion.

It might be a good idea to check tours which visit during sundown, or to do this trip on one’s own closer to the evening in order to enjoy the famous sunset views.
