Sherwood Mansion – Newport, Rhode Island

Sherwood Mansion 1

One of the last states we visited on our quest to visit all dates was Rhode Island. We had a great time and visit spent a day in Newport. While there we visted the State House and Roger Williams Park. We also had to walk around a little and see some of the mansions. All I could really get was pictures from the outside, but they are beautiful. This one is called the Sherwood Mansion. While it was originally built in 1872 as a Stick Style cottage for New York leather merchant Loring Andrews, this historic property that has undergone several transformations over the years. It was remodeled in the Queen Anne Revival style by Theodore Augustus Havemeyer and in the Georgian Revival style by Pembroke E. Jones. Later it underwent further remodeling in the Georgian Revival style by architect Francis L. V. Hoppin and was renamed Sherwood Mansion. Then in 1971, Sherwood Mansion was converted into apartments. The mansion is now part of the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, which is a National Historic Landmark and a major tourist attraction in Rholde Island. One of the first things I though of when I heard the name of the mansion was Sherwood Schwartz who was the producer of the Brady Bunch and Gilligians Island (for those old enough to remember, lol).
