Munich’s Oktoberfest may be the biggest and most famous festival in Germany next month (yes, Oktoberfest is mainly in September), but it’s not the only way to celebrate the upcoming new season.
Oktoberfest this year runs from September 20th to October 5th this year, but if you don’t want to wait, Bad Dürkheim’s Wurstmarkt starts earlier, running September 12th–16th and 19th–22nd. Despite its name, which means Sausage Market, it’s actually a wine festival with visitors able to sample around 300 different wines from local vineyards at over 36 traditional wine stalls called “Schubkärchler.”
With a later start than Munich, Stuttgart has its own beer-flavored carnival, the Cannstatter Volksfest, which runs September 26–October 12 this year, with beer tents, traditional parades, regional food delicacies and carnival rides.
But if all that beer, wine, food and celebration just make you want to run, there’s help for that, too: the Berlin Marathon is expected to draw over 50,000 runners on September 21st.
