St Albans is a cathedral city in the English county of Hertfordshire. It was the first major township on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north.
St Albans was once named Verulamium – the third largest city in Roman Britain – and the Verulamium Museum highlights the district’s rich history with interactive displays and some of the finest Roman mosaics and wall plasters outside the Mediterranean.
The beautiful 11th-century St Albans Cathedral on the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in England, stands prominently in the city centre.
A typical English pub, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks (title picture) claims to be the oldest pub in England, but it has to be said there are others that make the same claim. The pub is located at the edge of the beautiful Verulamium Park.
St Albans is just off the M1 motorway, a drive of a little over one hour from London. The train is even faster – only 20 minutes from central London.
