Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #8.5

WorkerBee ·
What a beautiful church Gumbo has found! WITW? The clues: 18th century Spanish colonial architecture, typical of Franciscan missions; Banner in English; Materials are not typical of Florida or Texas missions; Various effigies of animals and unreal creatures, often incorporated by the Franciscans into their liturgy in order to convert American Indians. Typical of US southwestern states; Not one of the remaining California missions; Not in Santa Fe; Checked missions in Arizona. Found (as did...

Re: Serra's Church, Mission San Juan Capistrano, California. Where Gumbo Was #46

PortMoresby ·
Somewhere I've got a snapshot of a very young me with a tiny lady holding an object who had insisted my friend take our picture in the garden together. It was in the village of Petra, Majorca and she officiated at the small museum commemorating Junipero Serra's birthplace. I was spending the summer on the island and every student educated in California knows his name almost as well as their own. The address of my high school was El Camino Real, Father Serra's road from mission to mission and...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, April 29, 2014: Water Lilies, Mission San Juan Capistrano, California

Paul Heymont ·
More on the swallows, which now mostly nest a few miles away: Staff at the Mission of San Juan Capistrano are trying to lure the swallows back by playing male swallow mating calls, hoping it will attract the females to the traditional nests, and that they will be followed by the males. Here's a VIDEO from the Orange County Register, and more INFO from the Mother Nature Network.

Re: A visit to Great Basin National Park

PortMoresby ·
Pheymont, you speak as if budget cuts are in the future when in fact the Park Service has been functioning with less and less for years now. The Service has a mission to which they're dedicated but less funding has meant "deferred" maintenance on buildings, trails, you name it. And when features of a park are deemed unsafe or there isn't personnel to oversee visitors then parts are closed. I've experienced that myself recently when a trail I've visited in years past was closed. I have no...

I'm enjoying reading these Blogs ! Very educational. Natural history is so interesting. Thanks DrF. Did you know that during the dry season Alligators dig holes in the river bed. When the river swells in the wet season these holes fill with water. And Fish. The Alligator does not harm them. He goes off to find his food in the river. When the river dries out he is left with holes full of Fish who have taken refuge from the receding water. They are the Alligators "Larder" to get him through...

Thanks for the comment, GarryRF. I do love love nature and natural history and often my travels center around seeing these sorts of sights. I did not know that about alligators and the fish. But I can't say I'm surprised. Nature has developed marvelous mechanisms of adaptation that never cease to amaze me. What I am looking forward to, as are others, is your first piece on those great Cuban cars. Not nature, but beauty of a different kind!

Re: California road trip ideas

Theodore Behr ·
That helps me figure out what to tell you, Mrs. Briggs OK, so I'd suggest you fly into LAX. You'll need a car rental to get around LA. Spend three or four days here, may go see Disneyland, maybe go see Universal Studios, maybe go to Knott's Berry Farm. Maybe see the making of a TV show. You could easily spend 10 days in LA, but you've got 10 days for the whole trip, I guess, so that's all you'll have time for. Then head out of the city. You'll want to head out on Hwy 101, which takes you...

Re: Mission San Juan Capistrano -- "Worth a Visit"

Interesting tour DrF. Other than a living museum does the mission have a function today ? Very comprehensive collection of photos and well described too. There must be a long and interesting story to these missions - other than teaching religion. Fascinating history of a new country. Thanks.

Thanks the comment Garry. Yes the mission still functions as a place of worship. But the main place of worship is the new basilica which is right next door. Today it is mostly a museum.
