Lovely photos! I haven't been to Portland since I was a little kid on summer vacations...we often combined Portland, Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunkport. Maine looks just as pretty as I remember.

Re: Devils Tower National Monument
Nice photos of a fascinating place, Ottoman! I also visited the monument many years ago, and recall what an imposing and striking place it is. I can certainly see the cinematic appeal to Mr. Speilberg, who uses the physical drama of the place so very well in the last half of the movie.

Re: 100 Years of Flight in Kitty Hawk, NC
I empathize with your rainy, muddy experience. That is no fun. As I recall, Kitty Hawk is also very windy, one of the reasons the Wright brothers chose it. Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #5
It's a place with a colder climate because of the plants. Definitely not somewhere down south. PHeymont was writing about visiting Maine a few days ago. There was a beach there, I wonder if this is that beach? I'll take a guess at it. My guess is a trail around the Old Orchard beach in Maine.

Re: Tenement Museum: Immigrants' Lives, Past and Present
Thank you for this! When I was a high school history teacher in the early 90s, I used to take small groups of students there; the staff were very welcoming, and helped students work out for themselves what the different ways of life and work had been, and how it connected to their working-class lives today. I remember, on one of those visits, a docent pointing to the upper floors of a building down the block, where a garment sweatshop operated with recent Chinese immigrants; one of the...
