I have a hard time feeling sorry for those snowbirds, generally retirees with the wherewithall to escape the winter. I suspect subsidizing lying on a beach for weeks or months wasn't something meant to be built into the system.

I believe one may have a right but still be thought presumptuous for taking advantage of, I suspect, unintended benefits. I think there are more equitable ways of spending taxpayer money. Maybe rather than re-include Ontarians(?) they might cut off everyone else. If it means fewer Canadians in the Caribbean as a result, so be it. I don't think beach is a right either.

I grow weary of political correctness. Orcas are highly intelligent animals, no doubt -- and have the "cruelty" we expect of intelligent animals (anyone who's seen them hunt a baby gray whale for hours, only to kill it, eat its tongue and let the rest go to waste knows what I mean). My early travels in the US were all done with maps. I've been lost many times. So I bought the American Maps for my UK TomTom Sat Nav. Best thing I've done in years ! I love taking roads that aren't tourist routes - and getting lost - now. Explore the back woods and the one horse towns. Explore where the rich folks live and the poor. Taking photo's of local characters. Folks that have worse teeth than the Brits ! Show me the tourist route and I'll go the other way !

Eric Arthur Blair, Orwell's real name, is buried in a little churchyard in Oxfordshire, England (photo #18 in the Telegraph slide show). I've visited him there, a pilgrimage of sorts, and recommend it to anyone who's interested in the author. A peaceful and quintessentially English churchyard.

First visit to Bondi Beach in Sydney they had a stall at the side of the road. "Freshly Made Smoothies" The fruit was uncut and drinks were made to order. Those are all good pieces of advice, GarryRF! I too have the Fuji XP for wet days, beach, rafting, canoeing, etc. Nice not to have to worry if it will get wet. Usually I travel with two cameras, one a digital Canon pocket camera (fits into my shirt pocket). Handy to have at hand and shoots nice HD video, too. Dark is not the end of the show. I have seen streaking meteors flash in view. There have been times when I could see a part of the Milky Way or had a view of the Big Dipper. Over the ocean, I have seen flotillas of fishing boats off of places like Newfoundland. Even at night, you can see the lights of the boats bobbing. Once, I even saw a pod of whales in the channel off of Molokai. I peek every chance that I get. You never know what you will see.

I'm well aware that there may be many contributing factors to the problem of poor service. But I'm not there to consider the state of the world nor am I there to balance justice among the poor. I just want a decent meal at a decent price. Just as in any job - my own included - people just want me to do my job. Do it well. No excuses. And they show there gratitude occasionally, with a tip. Its the same with me. Good food and good service gets you well rewarded. Shape up or Ship out !

Thanks, that was a good article. I got some ideas from it! I always get confused about whether I need to take insurance from the rental and it's always sky-high. I have some credit cards that say they cover it, but I hadn't realized that a lot of time my own car insurance would cover me with the rental. Boy, have we wasted a bunch!
